The Luxury of Inheritance
The obi was where Japan's weaving was at its most lavish. We lift these gold-thread masterpieces from the loom and set them in a frame — so a brilliance that once adorned dress now lives quietly on the wall.
An obi woven with such lavish gold will never be made again — the artisans who create its gold thread now have almost no successors.
Hon-Kinpaku
Many obi in circulation today are woven with gold-toned synthetic thread, or carry real gold in only a fraction of the pattern. Every SAKAE ART obi is woven with hon-kinshi — thread born of genuine gold leaf — used not in one corner of the design, but generously throughout the weave.
The proof is woven into the edge of the obi itself: the characters hon-kinpaku, 'genuine gold leaf.' A small inscription, hidden until the edge is turned, quietly telling the truth of its luxury.
